When I describe grits to people not from the South, I explain that it's kind of like Cream of Wheat. Being from California, I had never had them until my 8th grade English teacher made them for us when we finished Across Five Aprils. That was also the first time I'd ever made or tasted hush puppies.

Pampered Chef stuff makes me happy. One of my husband's former parishioners in Montana sold it and the church kitchen was stocked with it. It spoiled me for every other church kitchen I've dealt with since! I'd also totally rush back into my burning house to save my cookie scoops.

[...] Lemonade: equal parts water and sugar over medium heat. Stir until it’s a syrup. Add the same measure of lemon juice. Add a whole bunch of cold water, OR – and here I gave myself a star – you can just chill the concentrated lemon-syrup stuff and mix it with pitchers of ice water as needed.
Ha! I was hoping you'd never happen upon this post where I reveal my complete lack of secret knowledge. :)

I checked - we aren't at the same time (yay!) but I am at the same time as Sarah! There really isn't a presentation on the schedule where I'd think "oh, that one can be opposite mine - I am not interested in the topic." But that still bummed me out. I've worked with Sarah on a few projects now and really gotten to know her but we've never met in person, and I know her presentation is going to be terrific.

What?! You need input on this? This is why we HIRED you! All joking aside, your presentation is one I'm really looking forward to, so I'm hoping we aren't slated to give ours at the same time.

What makes me feel welcome? Some sort of connection to the blogger -- maybe we've met at a conference, maybe we've had a nice exchange of thoughts on Twitter or Facebook, etc. Maybe we went to same college. Maybe they reached out to me and commented on one of my posts first.

If I have a personal antidote to share that is relevant to the blogpost, I typically chime in the comment box.

And I know we are guilty of this at our blog (again, why we hired you), but using too many plug-ins that confuse/irritate/distract me will send me packing.

Hook 'em!
You've given me two ideas of how to foist my ideas off onto my daughters while they're too young to object - the dress, and that CAKE! They both want to be veterinarians, and I sense maroon in my future, but the First Communion celebration is all.mine.

That's a beautiful dress on a lovely girl - congratulations!

Indeed, crickets would be embarrassing.

I will participate if there is a lively debate, in which I don't stress on whether the author reads the comments or not. But, too many comments makes me think, "Why bother?".

Best of luck at the conference!!

This helps in so many ways, including the fact that you actually left a comment. I was going to be beyond embarrassed if I had this happy blog post with discussion questions about how to make people feel welcome...and only the crickets chimed in.

I think that's an interesting point re: the author will read what you've said. I wonder if there's a point where commenters don't care so much about the actual author reading what they've written as just participating in the discussion - you know?
